A visit to the Clay Ceramic Museum Denmark in Middelfart: exploring the world of Lucie Rie a world renowned potter from England and a retrospective from Danish ceramicist, Martin Bodilsen Kaldahl who I met in his studio in Roskilde during my last visit here 3years ago.

As my residency time at Gulddysse Kulturgard near Roskilde in Denmark is fast coming to an end, here are some random photos of my new work and its inspiration from the snow covered rock walls in Sweden.
Big thanks to the help and laughs and warm welcome from Vibeke, Rikke, Jytte, Dot, Daiva, Henning, Kerstin and Lene and many others. Til next time, happy potting.
After they are bisque fired I will pack them carefully for the trip home and then decide how to glaze fire them: after doing some glaze tests first. The clay joinery is never over. 😀

An afternoon at the Henie Onstad Art Centre in Oslo. Followed by a long walk on a frozen fjord. And I got a taste of the work of the colourful work of Yayoi Kusama. Looking forward to seeing her work at the NGV when I’m back: her work is so joyful.

Excited to be part of ‘Germinate’, ceramics exhibition @thehiveoceangrove from March 7th - March 30, 2025.

Opening March 8th, 2-4pm. The Hive Gallery, 1/41 Smithton Grove, Ocean Grove.

Wanted to share a glimpse of my new Snow Gum Dark pieces on their way to the Gallery.

Super excited to be part of this exhibition ‘Germinate’ with @cindytong.ceramics @kuhl.ceramics @kirstymangerceramics @sophialegoe @glenn.england @bridgetfoleyceramics @clayann2 (Ann Ferguson) and Lee Goller.

I will back from my Danish ceramic residency/ski holiday just in time, (day before the opening). Come say hello at the opening, share some ceramic/holiday stories and a glass of bubbles.

Busy first week in Denmark, getting used to the co

Busy first week in Denmark, getting used to the cold, catching up with friends and family, visiting Guldysse Kulturegard ceramic studio where I will be running some workshops and making some new work with German clay and immersing myself in endless history and culture: loving it already.

First post: an afternoon at the Design Museum Denmark: ‘The Cup and the Ceramacist’. Can’t wait to try some new cup ideas.

Throwdown spoiler alert!

I couldn’t help but shout at the telly when I heard Chris the potter say that his clay had a shrikage rate of 9%, so “his hole is 9% larger than it needs”.

This sounds reasonable. Just increase your measurements the same as shrinkage, right?
I made this error last year trying to make a 10cm mug.
This isn’t how shrinkage works!

To calculate shrinkage you need to divide the required size ( in my example 10cm) by the percentage left after shrinkage.

If a clay has a 9% shrinkage, it will be 91% the original size after shrinkage.

So, divide 10cm by 91% =10.98cm

Doing small measurements like this, it probably won’t make much of a difference. But even if you’re off by a millimeter or two...it could make the difference between winning and losing.

Hank said I was maths shaming. But I swear, I’m not. Full disclosure I should have posted this reel yesterday, but I got the maths wrong...again! It was only when I checked on @oldforgecreations blog about clay shrinkage numbers, that I realised my mistake and had to redo my reel . 🙈

Wait for it: cleaning the bottoms with a wet sponge: ultra slowly so as not to disturb the powdery glaze too much, then it’s into the kiln.

I didn’t get a chance to post at the end of 2024 about the Active Travel Arts Projects that I did with Wyndham Vale PS, Little River PS and Manorvale PS in terms 3&4.
Such a joy to see the growth in understanding about the benefits of Active Travel to school and the artworks that would be printed onto Mesh and Footpath decals around the school and bike sheds, for the whole school community to see.
A big thanks to the Specialist Art Teachers for enthusiastically jumping in on these projects and putting their own creative stamp on the art lessons and the final installations.
The mesh and decals are a constant reminder of the importance of living actively everyday.

And that’s a wrap for the 3rd Annual Geelong Ceramics Market. Day 2 done: time to pack up, put the feet up (for a night), before getting back into the studio to replenish my home gallery shop shelves.

Day 2 was even busier than Day 1? How was that possible? Thanks to peeps from Geelong/Surf Coast/Bellarine and surrounds and from all over the state for supporting small business potters. We salute you.

We are stay-cationing this summer, so chances are I will be hanging in the cool air-conditioned studio in January, when I’m not stand up paddling (hoping Santa heard that? 😜).

Today I was off to Cloudehill Gardens in Olinda, to refresh and replenish the shelves there in time for Christmas.
And after that we took a stroll around the beautiful gardens.

Big thanks to Jeremy for introducing me to the famous gardens he created and for supporting my planters and vases in the Diggers Shop.

Thanks to everyone who dropped by this year for the laughs, the peer skill sharing and building, the impromptu crepes, your enthusiasm and inspiration. The shelves often had a mixture of wheel thrown and handbuilt work in progress. So great to see so many individual styles emerge. So inspiring.

I have popped some Surf Coast Summer 4week courses up on the website for January 2025: Friday or Saturday morning options.
Will put up the open studio access sessions soon. And no need to worry about the hot summer, (or cold winter), the studio is air conditioned for your comfort.

The studio will be closed in February as we travel to Denmark to catch up with family and I am excited to visit the beautiful Gulddysse Kulturgård in Gundsømagle, close to Roskilde in Denmark and catch up with the lovely people who create there. @gulddyssekulturgard
Can’t wait to get creative there again in the beautiful converted old farm building in the lush green countryside.

Making new work for the 3rd Annual

I’ve never been there, looking forward to checking it out and having a sneaky beer.
